Many dishes are cooked in taverns and restaurants on the Island, from the most typical ones such as Moussakà, Greek-salad, zatziki, saganaki to the most elaborated ones that put together traditional and modern techniques, as well as the influence of other Mediterranean cuisines.

…If you will see big octopuses hung out to dry walking through the strees of Chora or on the promenade… order a fresh one, a little bit grilled over embers and you will eat the best octopus you have ever tasted! In addition to the fish, excellent in general, many pork and goat dishes, such as Provastses that is braised pork seasoned with herbs.
If you want an aperitif you can go to ouzerias, typical taverns where it’s possible to taste various Greek appetisers, called mezedes or mezes. The most typical is exactly the grilled octopus or the octopus in red wine sauce, going with other excellent and tasty appetisers.
Together with mezedes Greeks drink the ouzo, a typical anise-flavoured liqueur (35% alcohol vol.) diluted with water and ice, with an opaque white colour.
